How to Become a Certified Elevator Technician

Kencor Elevator Systems employs field-trains Certified Elevator Technicians (CETs) who respond to customer requests 24/7 to provide maximum knowledge, skill, and customer service. The CET® Education Program provides the elevator repair and maintenance companies the means of obtaining and authenticating critical education and training related to elevator and escalator specific technical theory, industry codes, components, and competencies.  The American National Standards Institute–the beacon of quality certification, accredits the elevator maintenance and repair training program to promote safety and standards in the industry.

There are currently two levels of CET training that can be achieved after employment and fundamental education eligibility requirements are met. In CET Level I the summary of curriculum requirements include:

• Four courses designed for an estimated minimum of 290 study hours and 4,000 on-the-job or field-study hours. The program is designed for most qualified employees to complete training in two years.
• Unit examinations taken at the end of each course with a maximum of 45 minutes to spend on each exam.
• CET Level I Exam taken after all four courses and unit examinations. The maximum time a CET Candidate can spend on this comprehensive exam is three hours.
• All exams are closed book and a score of 85 percent or higher is required to pass each exam.
• All exams are proctored according to the CET Supervisor Manual.
• Unit exams and the final exam can be taken multiple times until passed, in order to move on to the next unit. CET candidates who fail the exam must by re-evaluated by the CET Supervisor (CET-S).
• After units and exams are all completed and passed according to the Level I core curriculum, an Associate Elevator Technician (AET) Certification of Completion will be awarded.

Once AET status is achieved, the individual can move on to the CET Level II (Advanced Curriculum) certification, which includes:

• Eight courses, designed for an estimated minimum of 290 study hours and 4,200 on-the-job or field-study hours. The program is designed for most qualified employees to complete training in two years.
• Unlike Level I, the Level II Advanced Curriculum is divided into CET Year-Three and CET Year-Four packages. Year-Three must be completed before moving on to Year-Four.
• Unit and final exams are designed similar to the Level I requirements.
• After units and exams are all completed and passed according to the Level I core curriculum, a Certified Elevator Technician (CET) Certification of Completion will be awarded and the technician will be given a photo certification card and number from the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) Certification Board. This certification is renewable every year with 10 required contact hours of continued education from an NAEC-approved provider.
