Exploring Elevator Aesthetics

Submitted by Kencor Elevator Systems, Inc.

What we have in mind when designing an elevator is providing the passengers safe and reliable transportation to their destinations. During the construction of many building designs there is rarely a second thought to any innovation while constructing the transportation within the building. The elevator is treated as a commodity that needs to be provided and not as a design element in and of itself.

In traditional building designs, the development of elevator systems was focused on the safety and security of the passengers which led to less of an interesting elevator car design and structural fabrication. Typically, there has been a standard development of the structural integrity of the machine which can be found in many of the original buildings throughout the world.

Today, however, with the technological advancements in elevator construction and design allows for creativity to be endless. Elevator structures and cabs have essentially defied gravity with their construction and design. The elevator is no longer just a functional piece of equipment for passengers to safely move around a building. It has become a distinctive, iconic feature of the building itself, becoming the focal point of a lobby with its’ sophisticated finishes and chic design. It can offer unexplored possibilities to turn architects’ and designers’ ideas into reality.
